What Is Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Part C, offer an alternative to Original Medicare and Medigap coverage. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, Medicare pays a fixed monthly amount directly to the plan, which then manages your care and assumes responsibility for your medical coverage, including all Part A and Part B services.
Most Medicare Advantage plans operate through HMO or PPO provider networks and typically bundle Part A, Part B, and often Part D prescription drug coverage into a single plan. To enroll, you must continue paying your Part B premium and reside within the plan’s designated service area.
What Does Medicare Advantage Cover?
Medicare Advantage plans provide the same coverage as Medicare Parts A and B, and most also include Part D prescription drug coverage. Instead of paying deductibles and the typical 20% coinsurance for Part B services, such as doctor visits and outpatient care, you’ll generally use a network of local providers and pay set copayments for covered services.
Cost-sharing amounts vary by plan, as each Medicare Advantage plan establishes its own copays, deductibles, and coverage rules.
What’s the Difference Between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Plans?
The key difference is how each type of plan works with Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans replace Original Medicare by providing your coverage directly, while Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work alongside Original Medicare by helping pay for costs after Medicare has paid its share.
