Helping North and South Carolina residents find the right Medicare supplement plan with the tools and guidance they need.

What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, helps cover the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare Parts A and B don’t. Medigap policies are offered by private insurers but regulated at the federal level so that plan benefits are consistent across providers. Their purpose is to supplement Medicare by filling gaps in coverage.

How Does Medigap Work?

While Original Medicare covers a large portion of healthcare expenses, it doesn’t pay for everything—leaving you responsible for out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. That’s where Medigap comes in. Once Medicare pays its share, your Medigap plan steps in to cover the remaining costs, which can significantly reduce or even eliminate what you owe, depending on the plan you choose.

What Does Medigap Cover?

Medigap offers ten standardized plans—A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Since these plans are regulated at the federal level, their benefits remain consistent no matter which insurance company you choose. The main difference lies in the monthly premium cost, which can vary by provider. That’s why comparing options is important—and the Cornerstone Senior Hub team can help you find the best plan at the most affordable rate.

Understanding the Various Medigap Plan Options

Plan A

Although this plan offers fewer benefits compared to other Medigap options, it still covers the 20% of outpatient medical costs that you would typically pay out of pocket.

Plan B

Plan B includes all the benefits of Plan A, plus coverage for your Medicare Part A hospital deductible.

Plan C

Plan C takes care of nearly all the out-of-pocket costs you’d typically owe, except for excess charges—an additional 15% fee that some healthcare providers may choose to bill.

Plan D

This plan provides extensive coverage, leaving you responsible only for excess charges and the Medicare Part B deductible.

Plan F

Plan F stands out as the most comprehensive Medigap option, covering 100% of the out-of-pocket expenses you’d typically face—which explains its widespread popularity.

Plan G

Plan G offers coverage nearly identical to Plan F. The only cost you’ll need to handle is the Part B deductible—after that, Plan G takes care of the rest.

Plan K

This plan trades lower premiums for reduced benefits. While it covers your Part A deductible, you’ll be responsible for sharing most other costs.

Plan L

Plan L and Plan K are very similar, but Plan L comes with higher premiums and lower cost-sharing.

Plan M

This newer plan provides broad coverage, leaving you responsible only for half of the Part A deductible, the full Part B deductible, and any excess charges.

Plan N

Plan N provides many of the same benefits as other Medigap options. You’ll pay your Part B deductible and any excess charges, while the plan covers the rest.
